Top Leaders Join the First EVER Community Town Hall on the Prevention of Underage Drinking!
On November 2, 2016, HPDICE sponsored an event called Our Community. Our Kids’ Health. Our Future. This event was tailored around addressing the following data collected by members of the coalition:
- Nationally:
60.8% of 12–17 year olds perceive no great risk from having 4–5 drinks at a setting –SAMHSA.gov - Locally;
29% of Hilton High School students indicated they had at least 1 drink in the last 30 days. – 2015 Youth Risk Behavior Survey - 58% of Hilton High School students indicated they tried their first alcoholic drink between 8 and 16 years’ old –2015 Youth Risk Behavior Survey
- 37.5% of local respondents surveyed indicated they knew someone who purchased, served or allowed someone under the age of 21 to drink/have alcohol– 2015-2016 Local 14468 Survey
- 50% of Monroe County students responded to having one or more drinks in a lifetime compared to 60% of Hilton High School students.– 2015 Monroe County and Hilton District Youth Risk Behavior Survey
- 177 – The number of alcohol related arrests in Hilton and Parma from January 2014 through November 2015. That averages to almost 8 per month. – GRANET

Lee Livermore, Public Educator from the Upstate New York Poison Center, did a wonderful job as Moderator. The event kicked off with opening remarks from Senator Joe Robach followed by a welcoming from Hilton School District Superintendent Casey Kosiorek. Audience members then heard from our panel of experts on ways to address underage drinking in our community.

At one point, the audience split out for a brainstorming session led by volunteer Facilitators, the majority who were High School Students. There was quite a buzz during this time where many ideas were generated to help decrease underage drinking in the Hilton Parma Community.
